Hong Kong tips: Jim McGrath with three bets for Happy Valley's Wednesday card
Flaming Passion
1.15 Happy Valley
2pts win
Rhapsody
1.45 Happy Valley
2pts win
Superbella
3.50 Happy Valley
2pts win
Trainer Frankie Lor looks set to enjoy one of his most lucrative meetings of the season when he saddles three major chances at Happy Valley, headed by the rapidly improving Superbella in the Class 3 1m1f handicap (3.50).
Lor, currently joint-fourth in the trainers’ championship, has his team in great form. His three winners this month included a potential star sprinter in Master Eight, who was hugely impressive when winning on debut at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Superbella was slow to find his feet in Hong Kong, dropping 22lb in the ratings before blitzing his rivals over course and distance one grade lower on his last start. Hit with a deserved 10lb increase this time, he should still be hard to beat with Joao Moreira retaining the ride.
A son of useful sire Passing Glance, Superbella won at Brighton and Lingfield by wide margins for Andrew Balding, albeit against modest opposition, and is typical of the improving type Lor does well with. Cheerful Days rates the danger.
Superbella’s stablemate Savvy Kingman has the ability to win the Class 4 handicap, over 1m½f (2.15) but will probably be well under the odds in a competitive heat. He needs everything to work in his favour.
Better value can be found with the Lor-trained Flaming Passion, who bids for his maiden victory in the Class 4 6f sprint handicap (1.15), in which he will be ridden as ever by Karis Teetan.
Flaming Passion is a three-year-old Australian-bred, who has improved on each of his last three starts and is well up to winning on his present mark. In-form Split Of A Second, back up in grade, has a light weight and looks his main opposition.
John Size is holding back the tide sitting on 60 wins in the trainers’ standings – he has four rivals within six of him – and Rhapsody can give him some welcome breathing space by taking the Class 4 6f sprint handicap (1.45).
Rhapsody’s last two runs have been solid, and provided Moreira can overcome an awkward gate eight draw, the four-year-old is well up to landing the second win of his short career.
Bets can be placed into HK pools with the Tote, Coral and Ladbrokes, first race at Sha Tin is off at 11.45.
