Hong Kong tips: Jim McGrath with three bets for Happy Valley's Wednesday card
Tailor Made
1.15 Happy Valley
2pts win
Helene Wisdom Star
3.15 Happy Valley
2pts win
Brilliant Fortune
3.50 Happy Valley
2pts win
Vincent Ho is set to follow up his glorious triumphs on Hong Kong Champions Day with success on a more modest level when he partners Tailor Made in the Class 5 handicap (1.15) over 1m½f at Happy Valley.
Ho was aboard the phenomenal Golden Sixty for his last-gasp win in the Champions Mile and completed a memorable double when taking the QEII Cup on Japanese mare Loves Only You.
While his impulsive move on Golden Sixty on the home bend rightly drew criticism, Ho is still riding very well in the main, and there is nowhere near the same pressure in the class system cellar, which is where Tailor Made finds himself.
With stats of 0-20 in Hong Kong, not surprisingly he has plummeted 42lb since arriving as the winner of a Yarmouth novice for Mohamed Moubarak. He has also had a change of trainer, from Michael Chang to Caspar Fownes.
It is fair to say that marginal improvement is noticeable since the switch — he has been beaten a neck and two lengths, respectively, in his two runs in similar races for Fownes — and from an inside draw this may be his breakthrough moment. President Star is next best in an open race.
Joao Moreira, maintaining a comfortable 16-win lead in the jockeys' championship, has another attractive book of rides, headed by Helene Wisdom Star in the Class 3 handicap (3.15) over 1m½f.
On a busy week at Punchestown, Henry de Bromhead is unlikely to look at Hong Kong, but if he did he might recall this Charm Spirit four-year-old, who he trained to win two from two at Dundalk under the name Aerclub.
This is his chance to break through for Tony Cruz, for whom he has finished in the frame in his last four starts. From gate 2, this useful type should travel in the box seat throughout, with the Ho-partnered Bundle Of Delight the value for the forecast.
Moreira should again be followed in the finale when he partners the Fownes-trained Brilliant Fortune in the Class 3 5f sprint handicap (3.50). He is confidently tipped to improve on two seconds in very strong company in his last two starts.
