Hong Kong's best horse Golden Sixty makes his reappearance in Sunday's Group 2 Jockey Club Mile (8.05) at Sha Tin, the centrepiece of three trials for the International Races on December 12.
Seven months is a long time to be absent from the racecourse, but Golden Sixty has warmed up for his seasonal debut by winning three barrier trials, and there is great confidence he will land his 15th consecutive win, although trainer Francis Lui will still have left something to work on in the next three weeks.
Vincent Ho has developed a great relationship with the local Horse Of The Year, and is unlikely to be concerned at being drawn the outside of seven runners. He has options, which could be an advantage with the possibility of a muddling tempo.
More Than This, having only his second start for Danny Shum, is capable of running well when fresh, while Derby winner Sky Darci can be expected to finish well over a distance that is perfect for him.
Richard Gibson's brilliant Wellington is another resuming after a long layoff – he has not run since winning the Chairman's Sprint Prize in April – and faces a strong field in the Group 2 Jockey Club Sprint (7.35) over 6f, which includes the intriguing Courier Wonder.
This is not Grand Final day for Wellington, who was nevertheless another to have caught the eye in barrier trials. The consistent Stronger is selected to make full use of his inside draw (2) and give Ho another of these important trial races, although Courier Wonder may well prove a menace if able to lead.
The unlucky Glorious Dragon gets his chance to break through this season when lining up in the Group 2 Jockey Club Cup (8.40), over 1m2f, although both Columbus County and Panfield will pose strong opposition.
Glorious Dragon ran out of room on the inside and could not get a clear crack at the leaders last time, but with any luck drawn three, he will go close in an intriguing contest.
In the finale, stick with the Douglas Whyte-trained Carroll Street despite a wide draw (11), which presents 3lb claimer Jerry Chau with a challenge but he should be equal to it. Newcomer Packing Lad is the danger.
