Hong Kong racing tips: Jim McGrath with three fancies on Wednesday's card
Rewarding Together
12.15 Happy Valley
2pts win
Larson
2.15 Happy Valley
2pts win
The Rock
2.50 Happy Valley
2pts win
Caspar Fownes is setting a scorching pace in the trainers’ championship and he is tipped to forge further ahead at Wednesday’s meeting at Happy Valley, where he saddles seven runners with excellent chances.
The standout among them is The Rock, who will be hard to beat in the 1m½f Class 3 handicap (2.50), a race which could act as a stepping stone to more ambitious targets later in the season.
Racing as Vasiliev for Clive Cox, the four-year-old won a mile Windsor novice prior to export, and in Hong Kong his record is one from four. Overall, he has never been out of the frame in eight starts, which underlines his admirable consistency.
The Rock has gone up a reasonable 5lb in the handicap for a last-start win in a 7f handicap at Sha Tin in September, and with Joao Moreira booked to ride, the son of Dutch Art can win on his first visit to Happy Valley.
Moreira, now 15 wins clear of Zac Purton in the jockeys’ championship, has his usual impressive full book, with the Frankie Lor-trained Rewarding Together particularly worth noting in the Class 4 6f handicap (12.15).
The Australian-bred son of Pierro has shown glimpses of promise, his most recent third in a similar race at Sha Tin being a positive pointer to this, especially as he has an attractive draw in stall two. On the ‘C+3’ course, inside gates have a big advantage at 6f.
Lor, like Fownes, is a trainer to follow on this attractive eight-race card, with Larson also having a great chance for him in the Class 2 5f sprint handicap (2.15), in which Hong Kong Win looks his main danger.
With at least three proven speedsters in the line-up, they will go a fierce pace to the first turn, and Chad Schofield will be angling to get a place in behind them from his stall eight draw, before producing his mount at the top of the straight.
Larson is twice a course-and-distance winner (a grade lower) and Lor has reportedly seen improvement in his runner this season. He is ready to capitalise in a hot race.
Bets can be placed into Hong Kong pools with the Tote, Coral and Ladbrokes. The first race at Happy Valley on Wednesday is at 11.15am
