Hong Kong racing tips: Jim McGrath with three fancies on Sunday's Sha Tin card
Master Montaro
4.25 Sha Tin
2pts win
Danon Premium
8.30 Sha Tin
2pts win
Winning Dreamer
9.10 Sha Tin
2pts win
Trainer Frankie Lor is only a minor player in the International Races but he is still expected to be under the spotlight on Hong Kong’s showcase raceday when Winning Dreamer defends his unbeaten record in the Class 2 6f handicap (9.10).
A record of five from five is promising enough for the son of ‘gun’ Australian stallion Deep Field, while an improvement of 43lb in the handicap in six months is impressive.
No surprise then that his jockey Vincent Ho is already comparing him to Golden Sixty at the same stage of their careers and, although this is by far his toughest assignment, he should still win.
It is a particularly strong field, with the Caspar Fownes-trained Sky Field, who is by the same sire as Winning Dreamer, appearing the main danger, while William Buick’s mount California Rad has a big chance despite his wide draw.
David Hayes saddles interesting import Pas Malotru, an ex-Marco Botti three-year-old who ran a cracker when an unlucky second in a Group 3 at Newcastle in June. He was subsequently third to Pinatubo in a Group 1 at Deauville the following month.
Hayes appears to be making a statement on Hong Kong’s biggest day as he also introduces the highly-regarded Master Montaro in the opening Class 3 6f handicap (4.25), with Zac Purton is booked to ride.
Agents came flocking to buy the four-year-old following his exciting winning debut on provincial track Pakenham, with the Hayes team leading the pack. Their judgement proved spot on when the Toronado gelding also won his next start at Geelong.
That Hayes has given Master Montaro three barrier trials in quick succession is an indication he means business first-up. It is a very winnable early target for a talented young horse.
This is an all-quality card and it is worth flagging up Japanese raider Danon Premium as one of the day’s best bets in the Hong Kong Cup (8.30).
Buick, his partner, is popular with local punters, who well remember the jockey’s great win in the QEII on the enigmatic Pakistan Star, and he can remain in their good books by taking the feature, in which the much-travelled Magical is undoubtedly his biggest threat.
Bets can be placed into Hong Kong pools with the Tote, Coral and Ladbrokes. The first race at Sha Tin on Sunday is at 4.25am
