Hong Kong racing tips: Jim McGrath with three Sha Tin selections on Wednesday
Majestic Star
2.15 Sha Tin
2pts win
King's Capital
3.15 Sha Tin
2pts win
Lightning Bolt
3.50 Sha Tin
2pts win
Jockey Karis Teetan is tipped to continue his sparkling form with an attractive book of eight rides on an all-dirt card at Sha Tin that looks certain to play abnormally following recent heavy rain.
Teetan's best chance is the Danny Shum-trained Majestic Star in the Class 1 6f sprint handicap (2.15), in which several climbing the ranks get their chance in the top grade.
Majestic Star is 3-9 in Hong Kong, including an all-weather win over course and distance two starts ago. But prior to his arrival, he had also shown promise for the Freedmans in Melbourne, winning two of his four starts as a juvenile.
Kurpany is an interesting runner for Caspar Fownes, who has a high opinion of the Irish import. It is possible Fownes will back the five-year-old up in a race at Sha Tin on Sunday should he run well in this.
But the one for value in the forecast (with Majestic Star) is Master Montaro, who also has a featherweight of 8st 2lb, which makes him a real threat, particularly with the first-time booking of Joao Moreira.
The David Hayes-trained five-year-old is racing on the dirt track for the first time but with a wide draw (stall 7 of 9), he may be better off than others inside him on the rain-affected surface. His three local wins have come from wide draws.
Teetan's next best is arguably Lightning Bolt, also for Shum, in the Class 3 6f handicap (3.50), a wide open race with plenty of chances. Lightning Bolt has gone up 8lb for a convincing course-and-distance win last time, proof he has continued where he left off in Britain, where he won at Yarmouth and Windsor for William Knight.
Hayes also has excellent prospects with progressive King's Capital in the Class 3 handicap (3.15) over 1m1f. The five-year-old has won twice locally on turf but also been placed on the all-weather. The style of his last win suggests a staying trip is what he is looking for.
Another all-weather runner Ultra Express looks the main danger.
