Hong Kong expert Jim McGrath with three bets for Sunday's Sha Tin card
Eptiwins
8.40 Sha Tin
2pts win
Eternal Harvest
9.10 Sha Tin
2pts win
Gunnison
10.15 Sha Tin
2pts win
The stage is set for another day of intense rivalry between Hong Kong's two headline jockeys, Zac Purton and Joao Moreira, and their potential shoot-out in Sunday's finale, a Class 3 7f handicap (10.50) at Sha Tin, is typical of their many clashes.
Defending champion Purton (100) is one behind Moreira (101) in their ongoing battle for the jockeys' title, and is keen to keep the pressure on despite there being three months remaining in the season.
Purton has been talking up his last-race mount Mighty Giant, who will be attempting his third win on the trot when he clashes with Moreira's Juneau Park, who bids to do the same. Both horses have enormous potential but Mighty Giant might have a slight edge this time.
The Class system in Hong Kong is tried and tested, and form students know that the jump from Class 4 to Class 3 is a big one. While lightly weighted Juneau Park undoubtedly has the ability to measure up, Mighty Giant has already done it, winning in the higher grade and getting an 8lb hike in the handicap for the effort.
Whatever the result in the finale, expect both jockeys to be to the fore throughout this high-quality card.
It is interesting to note that John Size, who saddles Juneau Park, is currently fifth in the trainers' championship, 14 behind leader Ricky P F Yiu, Mighty Giant's trainer. Size is chipping away quietly, and his success rate is likely to pick up in coming weeks.
A handy winner for Size could be Gunnison, in the Class 3 6f sprint handicap (10.15), one of five races on the all-weather track. This one-time Randwick Group 2 winner has shown a real liking for the Sha Tin dirt, as shown when he finished a solid second over course and distance in February.
With Moreira back in the saddle, from the inside gate, expect Gunnison to travel up on the pace before unleashing his final burst in the straight. He has the necessary fight to hold off strong opposition.
The riding revelation of recent weeks, Antoine Hamelin, is aboard the Yiu-trained Encore Boy, one of nine mounts for the French jockey locals have taken to their hearts. While many struggle to make an impression in Hong Kong, Hamelin followed an opening double at Sha Tin with a winner at Happy Valley on Wednesday.
Will Power has been leapfrogging his way up the class ladder and is a danger, but even with a light weight he is expected to find this grade much tougher, while Kings Shield, a noted all-weather horse, is also one to consider.
Eptiwins is still a maiden after 11 starts but that should be rectified in the Class 4 7f handicap (8.40), in which the David Hall-trained runner is likely to relish the step up in distance.
The Poet's Voice gelding just ran out of ground when flashing home for second at Sha Tin last time on his first start for Hall. He was responsible for recording the fastest final two furlongs, coming from a near-impossible position. He is ready to win.
Another recommendation is the talented Eternal Harvest, also trained by Yiu, in the Class 3 6f handicap (9.10). He has already won, making all, but it might pay to forget his last run. Vincent Ho takes the ride.
