The best betting opportunities at Thurles lie in two of the non-handicaps targeted at lower-grade horses. The opening beginners' chase is a case in point being restricted to horses rated 109 or below over hurdles and the one to take advantage of the conditions could be the Tony Martin-trained Explosive Boy.

This French-bred was a shade disappointing in handicap hurdles off a mark of 109 having shown plenty of promise in maiden hurdles, but he made a decent debut over fences in a 2m beginners' chase at Fairyhouse in January, where a mistake at a vital stage as well as being hampered by a faller at the second-last did his chances no good.
