Haydock Placepot tips: Keith Melrose attempts to land the Sunday Series Placepot

Haydock's televised card is made up mostly of big-field handicaps, which makes the Placepot challenging but potentially lucrative.

The advice is to up the number of lines and, if necessary, bring down the unit stake.

I am hoping to get through the opener with just two selections. Kimngrace has a great chance, but she is drawn in 14 and what pace there is lies elsewhere. So a hedge is necessary and dual course winner Boudica Bay, drawn in one, offers that.

Normally maidens are a good place for a banker, but given the 4.15 is restricted to debutants we are being denied that luxury. Road To The East and Yorkshire are well bred and among the likeliest to have been targeted at a race like this.

Stick to the high-drawn stalls in the 4.45, which is particularly competitive. I suggest Toussarok, Good Earth and Rambuso Creek and then risk bankers in the next two.

The Grant Tuer-trained Award Dancer is the selection in the 5.15 and Have Secret, who was well clear with another improver last time, in the 5.45.

That allows a couple of picks in the closing 6.15, in which Ana Gold and Canoodled look most appealing.
