Handicapper looks best of red-hot Karis Teetan's eight rides
Otouto
12.45 Happy Valley
1pt win
If ever a challenger emphatically threw down the gauntlet, it was Karis Teetan to champion Zac Purton with a brilliant five-timer at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Purton continues to ride with the mastery and confidence of a jockey who can call on most stables for mounts when it suits, and he currently leads Teetan 14-11 in the title race after nine meetings.
But Mauritius-born Teetan is clearly up for the battle and has a ride in each of the eight races at Happy Valley.
He teams up with astute Tony Millard, who has rocketed to the top of the trainers’ table with two trebles in two weeks, and the pair are poised to strike with Otouto in the 6f handicap (12.45).
The drop back in trip is going to suit the six-year-old, whose only win in Hong Kong came over 6f at Sha Tin three starts ago. He is now 6lb higher in the handicap, but is probably still as effective.
The remarkable rise through the ranks of rookie trainer Jimmy Ting can continue with Letsgofree in the 1m½f handicap (1.15).
Formerly with Caspar Fownes, Letsgofree is still capable of improvement for his new trainer, who saddled him for the first time when a good second over a mile at this track four weeks ago.
The Francis Lui-trained Universal Go Go is the danger and one to include in multiples.
The best value of Purton's seven rides comes on Victory Power in the 5f handicap (1.45).
Although creeping higher in the handicap without winning, Richard Gibson's four-year-old has put in two promising runs this season.
Bets can be placed into HK pools at Ladbrokes, Coral, William Hill and Betfred shops
