3pts winThe big question for punters going into day one of the Investec Derby meeting is not so much who is going to win the Oaks, but how bad is the ground going to be?

It could have a huge bearing on results because while jockeys have been known to stay on the far side on soft ground, when it’s very deep, which it will be if there was more rain overnight, they invariably head stands’ side.

At Epsom’s final meeting of 2017 every race developed on the stands’ rail and every winner was in the first two approaching three furlongs out, with most having assumed control on the rail with two furlongs to run. Hold-up horses never got a look-in.
