Following the excitement of last weekend’s Hong Kong International Races, it is business as usual at Sha Tin, with the powerful combination of John Size and Joao Moreira set to make their mark on the 11-race card.
The Size-trained Conte (8.40) can resume winning ways in a seven-furlong Class 2 handicap, in which several imports with Derby aspirations come under the microscope.
Conte, a son of Starcraft, has made rapid progress through the ranks, winning his first five races, and only suffering defeat on his last two outings.
But he acquitted himself very well last time when a creditable second in the Panasonic Cup over course and distance. He carried a light weight, but proved he is well up to Class 1 standard with his performance.
Back in Class 2, he will find it easier and he should win, although several of his opposition are ultimately destined for the top grade if they live up to their reputations.
One in that category is the Richard Gibson-trained Gold Chest, who caught the eye when winning a Listed race at Newmarket for Jane Chapple-Hyam in July. A big price tag was slapped on him, and owner Sutong Pan, who also paid a fortune for Akeed Mofeed five years ago, snapped him up.
Time will tell whether this purchase is as successful for the horse who formerly raced under the name Naval Intelligence.
Size and Moreira are set to strike again with Follow Me (9.50), a progressive type who won with a little in hand last month. He can maintain his upward claims in this Class 3 handicap over seven furlongs.
Earlier on the card, the Benno T P Yung-trained Chiu Chow Kid (7.05) can register another win for Silvestre de Sousa, who has gathered a huge following among local punters. The Sha Tin Mile should suit the well-drawn Chiu Chow Kid perfectly, and Class 4 poses no problem for him.
