Evening Angles: three to note at Newcastle based on Racing Post stats

Using the Racing Post's unrivalled bank of stats, we pick out three horses to back tonight based on trainer form, RPRs and, tonight's wild card, a handicap debutant . . .

Trainer form

Avenue Of Stars
8.15 Newcastle
Angle: Karen McLintock has won with two of her last five runners

Karen McLintock has been among the winners and saddles Avenue Of Stars in the concluding race at Newcastle.

The six-year-old has been freshened up after a busy winter, which included several useful efforts and one victory over course and distance. Although 5lb higher now, the third (twice), sixth, seventh and ninth have since won, so it looked a reasonable race.

Ratings

You Little Ripper
5.55 Newcastle
Angle: Sets the clear standard on RPRs

Peter Chapple-Hyam appears to have found You Little Ripper a good opportunity to get off the mark at the fourth time of asking. The three-year-old is eligible for handicaps, but his trainer must believe he is capable of winning a novice race before entering that sphere, with an RPR of 90 at least 6lb clear of all rivals.

The form backs that idea up too, as a second over a mile at this course was followed by another second at Kempton over 7f behind Masaru, who won a good handicap at Sandown on Friday. The drop back to 6f poses a question, but he showed plenty of speed last time.

Wild card

Born In Thorne
6.30 Newcaslte
Angle: Ivan Furtado has a 21 per cent strike-rate with handicap debutants

Handicap debutants have thrived for trainer Ivan Furtado, so much so that backing them all since the beginning of 2015 would have yielded a £1 level stake profit of £64.50.

The lightly raced mare Born In Thorne may be a six-year-old but fits the bill on just her fourth Flat start. Up in trip to 1m2f, she needs to show more, but her second in a bumper behind the now 130-rated hurdler Flash The Steel suggests the extra two furlongs could be ideal. A mark of 61 looks workable in a first-time tongue-tie.
