Disclosure to show much more eased in grade
The improving Miss Ranger had excuses for finishing runner-up last time 5.25 Chepstow
Although it is unnerving that her second place at Pontefract was her seventh from her last 12 starts under all codes, Brian Ellison's filly has looked in terrific heart on her last two starts and is probably worth sticking with while in such a rich vein of form.
Her win at Doncaster two outings ago deserves upgrading as she came from behind off a slow pace to nail two who were always up there and weren't stopping (eight lengths back to the fourth). She was again drawn wide at Pontefract nine days ago and the race panned out similarly, although she had even more to do and fell a length short.
Miss Ranger has obvious prospects off the same mark back on a track with a long home straight, although the potential lack of pace in this small field would not be in her favour, especially on drying ground.
Jocks Wa Hae is well worth another chance 5.15 Hamilton
Pat Shanahan's colt was impressive enough on easy ground two starts ago at this track that it could pay to forgive him finishing only fourth over course and distance 16 days ago when sent off at 2-1 as the going was much quicker.
The High Chaparral colt is not straightforward and needed plenty of driving when getting off the mark here (backed at 22 in running on Betfair), but he won going away, putting daylight between himself and Causey Arch, who won his next two starts. It was undoubtedly the performance of a horse thrown in off a mark of only 47 on his second run in a handicap.
The way Jocks Wa Hae was backed when bidding to follow up suggests a 9lb rise was considered well within his compass (the same connections' Born Innocent managed just that around here recently), but he was unable to slot in prominently from a wide draw and ended up too far back. The cheekpieces fitted there are discarded, although the faster ground may have been a bigger inconvenience and today's slower going is likely to suit better.
Considering the selection is not straightforward, the return of Tadgh O'Shea, who rode him on his previous two starts, is welcomed, even though the jockey will have to be on the ball from the start as his mount has again been lumbered with a stall one from the outside.
Disclosure drops in class after a promising second outing of the season 5.00 Leicester
The fact Disclosure won the only other time he contested a Class 6 company means he has to be of interest dropping into that grade for the first time in well over a year following a solid effort at Newcastle.
That success came on the all-weather at Wolverhampton early last season, but he confirmed most surfaces come alike to him when winning at Doncaster four months later - again when dropping in class. Furthermore, both those wins came off 65 - the same mark he races from today - and two of his four career successes have come in July.
It is also worth pointing out his three handicap victories came when he was carrying 9st 3lb or more - strongly suggesting he is more at home conceding weight to inferior rivals than receiving it from superior ones. That bodes well for today's race, in which he shoulders joint-topweight of 10st.
Les Eyre's one-eyed gelding looked like he might be running into form at Newcastle three weeks ago, keeping on for fourth after racing keenly. That should have put him spot-on for this contest in which the drying ground is in his favour, although he could have done without bagging the outside stall.
