A couple of weeks ago my wife returned home from a riding lesson with a fiver in her hand. “Look what I found on the golf course,” she said. “You keep moaning that you can’t get one home to save your life. You have it.”

I duly pocketed the fiver. Maybe this was the change of luck I had been waiting for.

Two days later Jacky texted me. “Picked up a £2 coin from the pavement. I wonder if I’ll ever find a tenner!” She gave me the coin when she got home, and I put it in my wallet.
