James Pyman's horses to follow
Optimum Time
Trainer: Eve Johnson Houghton
7th, Epsom, April 25
The three-year-old looked rusty on this first run of the season. Held up in rear, he didn’t enjoy the clearest of runs in the straight and may not have been entirely comfortable on the track as he flashed his tail a few times under pressure. Time is on his side – this was just his fifth race – and he is on a workable mark. He was trying 1m½f for the first time and there is enough stamina in his pedigree to suggest he can make his mark at this trip.

Roundhay Park
Nigel Tinkler
Won, Ripon, April 28
The sprinter will receive a hefty rise in the weights, but he won this 5f handicap with more in hand than the official margin (three and three-quarter lengths) as he made up ground from off the pace and the early gallop appeared not to be overly strong. He got better the further he went (should stay 6f) and his ability to handle cut in the ground bodes well for the timebeing given the ground has yet to dry out at many British Flat courses.

David Barron
4th, Ripon, April 28
Dropped to an interesting mark and this fourth was a marked step up on his return when tenth (first run as a gelding). His best effort last season came on a quick surface when winning a Class 2 Newmarket handicap, and if you assume he might be better on quicker ground than he encountered in this race, you can make a case for him finding the improvement needed to win a similar race to this in the near future. He doesn’t have many miles on the clock and is from a yard who do well with sprinters.
