Ascot Placepot tips: Graeme Rodway with 16 lines on trials day
Plenty of quality races should ensure the Placepot has a decent pool at Ascot on Wednesday.
Nine are declared for the opening mile handicap (1.50) confined to apprentice riders. Andrew Balding has had plenty of top apprentices start their careers at his stable and it’s worth taking a chance on 7lb claimer Harry Davies getting the job done on Good Birthday. He is a banker.
Eve Johnson Houghton won the 5f conditions race (2.25) last year with subsequent Windsor Castle hero Chipotle and it looks significant she runs Whistle And Flute in the same colours.
The mile fillies’ conditions race (3.00) is a tough six-runner race with not much form on offer. Stick with John and Thady Gosden’s Kings Joy and Queenlet for William Haggas.
Last year’s Gold Cup runner-up Princess Zoe holds a class edge in the Longines Sagaro Stakes (3.35) and must go well. The ground is lively, though, so put Wordsworth in too.
The Merriebelle Stables Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes (4.10) looks between Hierarchy, Go Bears Go and Wings Of War. Put Hierarchy and Go Bears Go in and hope for the best.
The winner will be needed in the Paradise Stakes (4.40) and it’s worth taking on likely favourite Valiant Prince with course specialist Sir Busker and the outsider Intellogent.
