Won, Exeter, December 7
You could argue that this improving chaser had the run of the race, making most under a well-judged ride from Lizzie Kelly, but he is on a steep upward curve with this his fourth win from his last five starts. Jumping is a big strength. Here, he gained ground at many of the fences and this five-year-old can continue to progress this season.

Wakanda
Sue Smith
5th, Wetherby, December 8
A healthy 29 per cent career strike-rate in chases (seven wins from 24 starts) and this spin over hurdles should have tuned him up for a crack at a valuable staying chase prize, possibly the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby on December 26 – he was beaten a head in the 3m handicap last year. His chase rating is just 3lb higher than when winning last season’s Sky Bet Handicap Chase at Doncaster in which this season’s Grand Sefton winner Warriors Tale was a head back in second.

Brewin’Upastorm
Olly Murphy

Won, Huntingdon, December 9
This five-year-old bounded clear on the run-in to score on this hurdles debut and decisively beat the penalised runner-up Brecon Hill (an easy winner of a similar race over the same course and distance last month). Brewin’Upastorm evidently can hold his own in better company. He comfortably had the speed for this sharp two miles, although having won a point over three miles he should stay further.
