Zoustar and Chasemore Farm the perfect pair at Tattersalls
Breeders of Lezoo shine with another filly by Tweenhills' star at the sales
Chasemore Farm and Zoustar are a match made in heaven, whether that's on the track or in the sales ring.
Andrew and Jane Black bred Lezoo, the Australian sensation's first northern hemisphere Group 1 winner, and now they are the breeders of the most expensive yearling he has sired from his European base of Tweenhills Farm, with the sale of their half-sister to Boonie for 325,000gns to Karl and Kelly Burke at Book 1 on Thursday.
The yearling commanded a substantially higher price than Lezoo, who was snapped up for 77,000gns by Hamish Macauley at Book 3 last October.
Lezoo's exploits for trainer Ralph Beckett and owners Mark Chan and Andrew Rosen, which also include victories in the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes and the Listed Empress Fillies' Stakes, helped to raise Zoustar's profile in perfect time for the main autumn yearling sales.
"It's brilliant," said a delighted Jack Conroy, manager of Chasemore Farm. "This filly is a lot different to Lezoo. She's a big, strong filly who walks really well and took showing in her stride. She's a lovely filly and she made the money she deserved."
Offered as Lot 442, she is a half-sister to last season's Molecomb Stakes and Windsor Castle Stakes third Boonie and is the third foal out of Dice Game, an unraced Shamardal daughter of Scatter Dice, who is a winning Manduro half-sister to Ormonde and Cumberland Lodge Stakes winner Systematic.
The team at Chasemore has supported Zoustar since he first shuttled to David Redvers' Gloucestershire farm. As well as Lezoo and this yearling, there is a filly foal from his third European crop and two mares, including Lezoo's half-sister, in foal to him, on the Surrey farm.
"We just loved him," said Conroy. "He's a brilliant stallion, doing fantastically down under, and when you compare his covering fee there to what it is here, then he is great value.
"He's a great-walking stallion and, out of the ones we have bred by him, she would be the one most like him. She has a lovely broad head and moves so well."
Lezoo's success has been part of an excellent run of form for the farm, who also bred this season's Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes winner Noble Style and sold the Kingman colt to Godolphin for 525,000gns at this sale last year.
Breege, who finished third to Lezoo in the Princess Margaret Stakes, is another black-type juvenile to have been nurtured at Chasemore Farm.
Conroy added: "Lezoo's Cheveley Park win was brilliant for Andrew and Jane, they put a lot into it and we've had a lot of success on the track this year.
"It's a shame Noble Style isn't in the Dewhurst, maybe we could have won another Group 1! But Uncle Bryn [homebred Sea The Stars gelding[ runs in a Group 1 in Australia on Saturday so maybe he'll do it."
Uncle Bryn was second in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield last month and his Kingman half-brother brought 750,000gns from Richard Knight in the Tattersalls sales ring on Wednesday. The colt is a full-brother to Group 3 Prestige Stakes winner Boomer out of Wall Of Sound, who was second in the Listed Warwickshire Oaks and third in the Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes.
At Book 2, Chasemore Farm offers four more yearlings and Conroy is proudly looking forward to showing the stud's youngsters to potential purchasers at Park Paddocks, including a relation to their recent Group 1 heroine.
He said: "We have a great draft for Book 2 - a very nice Starspangledbanner colt, a full-brother to Breege who has done well for John Quinn this year, and they are out of Wowcha, a half-sister to The Wow Signal, so Starspangledbanner works well with the family.
"We have a really nice Showcasing colt out of Lezoo's half-sister and a Camelot colt out of a half-sister to Kodi Bear, and a lovely Iffraaj filly, so we have four more really lovely horses to sell."
Lezoo, Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes winner Noble Style and this Zoustar yearling have all occupied Box 482 in Barn V of the Wall Paddocks.
"We say it's our lucky box," said Conroy. "Don't bother looking at them, just buy the horse in box 482!"
The occupant of the box for Book 2 is the Camelot colt out of Parsnip, a winning half-sister to Rathbarry Stud sire Kodi Bear. He is definitely one to watch next week.
