'With the cross working so well it made sense' - Cheveley Park matings revealed

The might of Cheveley Park Stud's formidable broodmare band is set to travel both near and far over the coming months, with Group 1 winners and producers booked in for the best stallions around in Britain and Ireland.

Patricia Thompson's Newmarket-based operation has had its colours enter the winner's enclosure numerous times in the sport's most revered places, including at Royal Ascot where Inspiral produced arguably the most devastating performance of the 2022 meeting when winning the Coronation Stakes by nearly five lengths.

The triple Group 1-winning daughter of Frankel remains in training at four with John and Thady Gosden, and you probably won't need more than one guess as to where her dam, the Classic and Group 1-placed Selkirk mare Starscope, is heading this year.

Bloodstock manager Matthew Sigsworth confirmed a short trip to Banstead Manor Stud beckons, and says: "She's down for Frankel again, which you'd expect off the back of Inspiral - and I expect she'll be married to him for quite some time!"

Only the most regal of mares and talented of track performers head to Juddmonte's supersire, and Cheveley Park have booked in two well-related sorts by the team's late, great Pivotal.

It is a nick that has famously produced, among others, Cheveley Park's Falmouth Stakes winner Veracious, the dual world champion Cracksman and last year's Prix de Diane and Nassau Stakes winner Nashwa.

Sigsworth says: "We've got a couple of others going to Frankel too. One is Praised, who's a half-sister to Chaldean by Pivotal. We've also got a maiden mare called Bashkirova, she's a granddaughter of Russian Rhythm who won the Princess Elizabeth Stakes.

"With the Frankel-Pivotal cross working so well, it made sense for her to go there for her first mating."

The path to Banstead Manor will be well trodden, with several of Cheveley Park's high-performing and blue-blooded mares set to be covered by Frankel's studmate, Kingman.

One of them is Sacre Caroline, an unraced Blame half-sister to the prolific Lady Eli and two other black-type performers, and already the dam of Hungerford Stakes winner Sacred, who stays in training at five with William Haggas.

Sigsworth says: "Sacre Caroline is in good form and is down to visit Kingman this year. She has a nice Frankel yearling filly on the ground who we will retain.

"Another who will go to Kingman is Veracious, she's currently in foal to Dubawi."

The team sadly lost the fine Furbelow, but the Pivotal mare and dam of Manton Park Stud's exciting first-season sire Advertise has two daughters to carry her name forward in future pedigrees.

Sigsworth explains: "We lost her foaling but have two of her daughters in Publicise and Sylvia Beach, by Dream Ahead and Ulysses respectively. They are going to visit Showcasing off the back of Advertise."

It is not only established sires who are the order of the day as the stud is due to send Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner Persuasive and Breeders' Cup heroine Queen's Trust to an immensely exciting newcomer, the brilliant Baaeed.

Already a successful producer through dual winner Persist, who remains in training with Haggas, Persuasive, the ten-year-old daughter of Dark Angel, has never been too far from the headlines and her Dubawi colt sold to Godolphin for 1,000,000gns at Tattersalls Book 1 in October.

"Persuasive is in foal to Kingman and due to foal at the end of March," reports Sigsworth. "She's one of two going to Baaeed, along with Queen's Trust.

"He was such an exceptional racehorse so we thought we'd send him our best racemares."

Among the newly retired fillies set for debut coverings are the Group-winning Lights On and Listed scorer Benefit, daughters of Siyouni and Acclamation respectively.

Sigsworth says: "Lights On was a Group 2 winner for Sir Michael [Stoute] when taking the Sandown Mile last year. She's going to visit No Nay Never, while Benefit will have her first cover with Saxon Warrior, who made a good start with his first runners last year.

"Another maiden mare who was a stakes winner is Canonized, who like Benefit is also by Acclamation, and she is going to visit Churchill. He also had a good year in 2022."

Baaeed's sire, the redoubtable Sea The Stars, is also set for his fair share of support from Cheveley Park. Among his dates this year is Intimation, a Dubawi half-sister to Sea The Stars' dual Summer Mile winner Mutakayyef and Veracious.

Sigsworth says: "Intimation is a Group 3 winner and heads to Sea The Stars, along with Safina, a daughter of Russian Rhythm and the dam of Potapova and Marenko, and also Troarn, a full-sister to Almanzor."

Other notables from the Cheveley Park band include Angel Vision, by Oasis Dream and the dam of 2021 Coventry Stakes winner Berkshire Shadow, Criteria, a winning and Group 2-placed daughter of Galileo, and Field Of Miracles, a half-sister to the smart Solid Stone and the dam of two black-type winners.

"Angel Vision is unsurprisingly going to revisit Dark Angel," says Sigsworth. "She's in foal to him, while Criteria is down for Lope De Vega. She has a lovely yearling colt by him and it's a mating that fits well.

"Another one for Lope De Vega is Field Of Miracles, a Galileo mare who was placed in the Ribblesdale Stakes and is the dam of Group 3 winner Earlswood."

There will also be plenty of support for the home team of stallions, with Ulysses set to receive both quantity and quality. Among his dance card is Group 1 winner Echelon, the dam of Falmouth and Sun Chariot Stakes heroine Integral.

Sigsworth says of their dual Group 1-winning sire: "We're going to support him with 18 of ours, including four stakes winners.

"One is Echelon, and the others are Exceptional, On Her Toes and Red Box.

"Another going to him is Osipova, the dam of Positive and Karsavina, by Ulysses, who won her only start for Clive Cox last year at Newmarket.

"She's a nice filly and we hope she can be a black-type performer. I think she will run in a Guineas trial and hopefully go on to better things."

Coral-Eclipse and Juddmonte International winner Ulysses, now ten, has got his second career off to a good start, with six black-type performers including last year's Group 3 winner and Irish Derby second Piz Badile.

He is also the sire of Chesham Stakes winner and Vertem Futurity Trophy third Holloway Boy, and the talented stakes winner Mighty Ulysses.

"His book is ticking along nicely, he had a good year last year with three stakes winners in Holloway Boy, Piz Badile and Mighty Ulysses, all of whom remain in training," says Sigsworth.

With the promising second-season sire Unfortunately continuing stallion duties at Oak Lodge Stud in County Tipperary and the admirable Dutch Art enjoying semi-retirement, the roster in Newmarket is completed by reliable duo Twilight Son and Mayson.

Twilight Son, 11, a dual top-level winner by Kyllachy, is the sire of 12 black-type performers and counting, including the Group winners Aria Importante, Twilight Jet and Twilight Spinner, as well as last year's King's Stand Stakes runner-up Twilight Calls.

Sigsworth says: "We've got 11 of our mares down to visit Twilight Son, the most notable ones being Lunar Corona, a Dansili half-sister to Inspiral, and Ice Gala, who was a stakes-placed performer and whose first foal by Twilight Son made 68,000gns to Tally-Ho last year."

Mayson, 15, is a stalwart of the Cheveley Park roster and the sire of King's Stand and July Cup winner Oxted, as well as Group 2 winner and Sprint Cup third Rohaan.

He will continue to find himself a popular choice, according to Sigsworth, who says: "Mayson has been well supported by his usual clientele and had another good season last year with Rohaan and plenty of other winners."
