Three from the top from Anthony Oppenheimer's Lynnwood Chase

Anthony Oppenheimer and his family have established generations of great broodmares from Hascombe and Valiant Studs but it was one of their rarer sales purchases who completed her lasting Royal Ascot legacy in the Ribblesdale Stakes on Thursday.

Lynnwood Chase, bought by Oppenheimer’s bloodstock manager Hugo Lascelles for €140,000 at Deauville in 2003, can now claim three triumphs at this meeting with Cannock Chase leading the way.

The Group 1 Canadian International scorer and winner of the Hampton Court Stakes on this very day five years ago was following in the footsteps of another winner of that same race three years prior through Pisco Sour, who later took the Prix Eugene Adam under the care of Hughie Morrison.

Lynnwood Chase, who is by South African sire Horse Chestnut, was the most international of individuals. As a racehorse, she was placed in France during a brief career with Richard Gibson and is a half-sister to useful Lord Admiral, a winner of the Jebel Hatta in Dubai for Charles O’Brien and now a stallion in India. Another sibling was Sharp Sailor, a good money-spinner in Hong Kong.

Star Catcher is the product of a meeting with Gilltown Stud’s Sea The Stars, who leads this year's Royal Ascot sires table with three winners after Crystal Ocean landed the Prince of Wales's Stakes and Stradivarius retained his Gold Cup crown.

The filly was winning for only the second time in her career as she and an unstoppable Frankie Dettori powered away from favourite Fleeting in the Group 2 event.

Whatever happens from here, Star Catcher’s place in Oppenheimer's broodmare band is assured.

"She [Lynnwood Chase] has been the most marvellous mare," her owner-breeder, who also had sixth-placed Frankellina, said.

"Unfortunately she died after having her final foal this year, but thankfully we have two more fillies to come from her, and three horses in all. She has a two-year-old filly by Kingman [named Maurimo] who is going into training with Roger Charlton and there’s another yearling filly by Frankel who we’ve got back at the stud. The last foal she had was a colt by Time Test."

He continued: "Star Catcher's a nice filly, very useful. When she ran third at Newbury, Frankie said he made a mistake and thought she could have won, so we knew she was pretty smart."

It is by no means Oppenheimer’s first influence in producing top-class winners, with the likes of Golden Horn and Cracksman standing out in recent memory.

His stud was also responsible for Frappe, who was not up to running at the meeting herself but is also the dam of three stars through Thakafaat, who took the Ribblesdale staged at York in 2005, the winner of the same race ten years later in Curvy, and 2011 Coventry hero and subsequent Irish 2,000 Guineas scorer Power.
