Rare painting of Tattersalls by Robert Bevan goes for £37,500 at Sotheby's
Work depicting a scene from 1921 had an estimate of between £30,000 and £50,000
A painting by Robert Bevan, depicting the auction at Tattersalls circa 1921 when the sale company was based in London, just over the road from Harrods, has been bought for £37,500 at Sotheby's.
It was described by Sotheby's as a "fabulous and rare work", "featuring classic cupola that survived WWII bombings and still stands as an icon of the establishment".
The painting by Bevan (1865-1925) had never been to auction before, since being acquired in the 1920s, and sold with an estimate of £30,000-£50,000.
It was acquired by Lt Col JK McConnel in the 1920s and came by descent to the present owner.
The next lot at the auction on Tuesday, by the same artist, named ‘The Hansom Cab’ – a depiction of a cab yard in 1911-12 – sold for more than double its estimate at £531,000 (estimate was £200,000-£300,000).
