Following events from the weekend, Europe’s leading sire of two-year-olds by prize-money is a horse whose seasonal standing stems from the work of a single operation.

Shamardal’s current crop of two-year-olds are the stallion’s first following his switch to a private stallion for the Maktoum family at Kildangan Stud. Health issues had seemingly caught up with the horse by the autumn of 2015 but happily the 17-year-old today remains in service and is listed as covering 58 mares this season.

Four years on from the announcement that Shamardal would become private and he is closing in on £1 million by European two-year-old progeny earnings, placing him ahead of Galileo and No Nay Never.
