Volkan Star, who cost a cool 1,000,000gns when bought by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock for Godolphin at last year’s Tattersalls Book 1, was off the mark at the second attempt in maiden company at Goodwood.

The Sea The Stars colt, bred by Forenaghts Stud and Samuel Mencoff, had already been to Goffs November as a foal, delivering a handsome return on investment with Dromoland Farm snapping him up for €330,000.

Volkan Star is the first progeny of Chicago Dancer, a half-sister to French Group winner Skins Game who was unplaced in eight starts for Johnny Murtagh.

He was an encouraging second on his debut at Newmarket a fortnight ago and scored as he liked on his step up to a mile in the British European Breeders Fund EBF Novice Stakes, coming six lengths clear as a 1-3 favourite.

Trainer Charlie Appleby has already made a hatful of fancy entries for his charge, including the Champagne Stakes and the Royal Lodge.

This year, the mare produced another Sea The Stars filly, bred by Forenaghts, Mencoff and Sunderland Holdings.
