Erasmus, the champion German two-year-old who was a wide-margin winner on what was to be his final start in the Group 3 Preis des Winterfavoriten in 2017, will take up stud duties in 2020 at Haras des Fontaines near Pau in south-western France after a deal was brokered by Richard Venn Bloodstock.

The Gestut Rottgen bred colt was trained by Markus Klug and won two of his three outings, also taking a maiden event.

From the first crop of Reliable Man, who stood at Rottgen for his first four seasons, Erasmus saved his best for the signature juvenile event at Cologne as he came eight lengths clear of Salve Del Rio.

The runner-up went on to be beaten only two and a half lengths in the German Derby while even further back was the German 2,000 Guineas winner Ancient Spirit.

Klug was thought to be pleased with his colt's development through the winter until an injury during a training gallop at the end of March ended his career. Erasmus had fractured a sesamoid bone and was operated on in Newmarket but was never able to return to the races.

His dam Enora won the German Oaks on her third career start and is the dam of three winners from four foals in Germany. Her daughters Eloge (Galileo) and Kizingo (Oasis Dream) are both members of the Rottgen broodmare band while Enora is currently based at Katsumi Yoshida’s Northern Farm in Japan.

Erasmus will stand for €1900 at the stud, which is run by the Abadie family.
