Rapidly improving pedigree helps US Navy Flag filly fetch €290,000

Pedigree updates were the order of the day at the Goffs Orby Sale on Wednesday, but few lots can claim to have undergone quite the enhancement that the US Navy Flag filly out of Nicky Hartery's upwardly mobile producer Wrood has.

The late-April foal already made plenty of appeal on pedigree when the catalogue came out, being a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Going Global.

But not only did that filly go on to land the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, two other siblings added black type to the page too, with Finans Bay running third in the Group 3 Royal Whip Stakes, while the two-year-old Profitable colt Mitbaahy reached the frame in the Julia Graves Roses Stakes and the Harry Rosebery Stakes.

These results mean that Wrood has now produced three winners and three black type performers from as many runners, a point that had not gone unnoticed by Dwayne Woods, who secured the filly on a bid of €290,000 when she was offered through The Castlebridge Consignment.

"All three runners out of the mare have been winners and obviously she's a half-sister to a Grade 1 winner, so she has great residual value," said Woods. "I loved her as an individual too, she's a very good-looking filly, and she will go into training with Sean [Woods, brother] in Newmarket."

Wrood has been a fine servant to Hartery, the current chairman of the board at Horse Racing Ireland, since she was purchased through Compas Equine for 55,000gns in 2015.

Although she has enjoyed some eyecatching results on the racecourse, Wednesday's six-figure transaction was by far the mare's biggest sales ring success.

Going Global cost Pioneer Racing just €15,500 as a yearling, albeit she presumably changed hands for many multiples of that in the private deal that saw her join Philip D'Amato's stable in the US, while Mitbaahy was knocked down to Oliver St Lawrence at £50,000 last year.

The mare produced a Saxon Warrior filly on April 17 this year.

Coolmore's US Navy Flag has enjoyed a productive Orby Sale, with three six-figure lots also including the half-sister to Poetic Flare bought by Al Shira'aa Farms for €220,000 and a half-sister to Glorious Empire who was signed for by Ben McElroy at €160,000.

The son of War Front's debut crop were bred at €25,000 and were averaging over €98,000 as the close of play neared on Wednesday.
