Promising Dubawi sire son Akeed Mofeed moves to Swettenham Stud

Akeed Mofeed, the only son of Dubawi standing in Australia, will relocate to Victoria’s Swettenham Stud this year, after making his mark from limited opportunities in South Australia.

The Hong Kong Derby and Hong Kong Cup winner, who covered his biggest book of 98 mares in 2018, transfers to the Victorian-based farm having spent five years at stud at Goldin Farms in the Barossa Valley and has sired 13 first-crop winners including three stakes performers.

His three-year-old son Poised To Strike, who is trained by Lindsay Park and was a last-start third in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes, runs in Saturday’s Group 3 Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield.

The stallion’s early success led to Swettenham Stud and Goldin Farms reaching an agreement for the ten-year-old entire to move states, in the hope he will be able to target a bigger pool of broodmare owners to enhance his prospects.

Swettenham Stud principal Adam Sangster believes Akeed Mofeed, who is a brother to Dubai Group 3 winner Jordan Sport, would be ideal for breeders looking to cash in on Victoria’s lucrative Vobis scheme.

“With Vobis sires incentives and The Showdown race, it's a great endorsement for Victorian breeders that Goldin Farms and his owner Mr Pan have chosen Swettenham to stand Akeed Mofeed,” Sangster told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“He's a very promising young son of the world-renowned Dubawi who has a runner in the Zeditave on the weekend, and he has a number more in the pipeline which shows the quality of horses he has got so far.”

The addition of Akeed Mofeed to the Victorian stallion ranks comes on the eve of the first running of the A$1 million The Showdown, a 6f juvenile race restricted to horses by Vobis-nominated sires, and follows on from the relocation of Foxwedge to Woodside Park Stud in 2019.

Akeed Mofeed was third behind Zoustar and Spirit Of Boom on last year’s first season sires’ table for winners to runners and sits at 40 per cent this season with this three-year-olds.

He has covered 338 mares at Goldin Farms, which was formerly the Lindsay Park Stud in the Barossa Valley, in five seasons at stud and is already the sire of Sydney winner Heart Conquered, the Group 3-placed Sunset Watch and the Phillip Stokes-trained Assertive Play.

Akeed Mofeed joins the likes of shuttlers Toronado and Highland Reel and young sire Trust In A Gust on the Swettenham Stud roster.

“Lindsay Park was purchased for Akeed Mofeed and he will always have a home at the property," Goldin Farms general manager Andrew Perryman said. "His first-season two-year-old runners were more precocious and successful than we could have imagined from only 60 live foals."

“We anticipate a steep rise in Akeed Mofeed’s visibility and popularity as those horses reach their optimal racing age.

“With Victoria’s broodmare pool, stallion availability and access to Vobis we see it as a positive and progressive move for Akeed Mofeed to be available to breeders in the state for the 2019 season.”

Akeed Mofeed, whose sire Dubawi has produced 163 stakes winners worldwide including 38 at Group 1 level, has 11 lots catalogued at next month’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale and 17 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.

He will stand for an unchanged fee of A$16,500 (£9,050/€10,400) in 2019.
