Popular choice Muhaarar ready for his first runner on Tuesday
Archie Watson-trained Baileys Freedom pitches the stallion into action
Muhaarar was installed as favourite to be leading first-season sire by number of individual winners in Britain and Ireland in RaceBets’ early market and the young stallion has the first opportunity to justify such confidence at Musselburgh on Tuesday.
Baileys Freedom looks to be bred for the job as his dam, Baileys Jubilee, made an immediate impact in winning a maiden at Kempton in early April on her own juvenile debut in 2012. In a non-stop 11-race campaign for Mark Johnston, she ended up placing in both the Lowther and Cheveley Park Stakes.
The Baileys horse feed company, founded by George Knowles and Paul Venner, has kept plenty of horses in training carrying their prefix. They have sent this homebred to the care of Archie Watson, who sends him on the long journey to Scotland for the Watch Racing TV Now Novice Stakes.
She was bought back for 25,000gns at Book 3 of last year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and is the second foal of her dam to see a racecourse so far, with Baileys Excel offering little in ten starts for Chris Dwyer.
Muhaarar, the champion sprinter with four Group 1s at three, as well as winning the Gimcrack and finishing a close third in the Middle Park Stakes, has proved popular at his owner Hamdan Al Maktoum’s Nunnery Stud and is on offer for £30,000 this year.
The greenhorn son of Oasis Dream had a first crop of 105 and made a striking impression in the ring, with his first yearlings selling for an average of 169,196gns.
Ironically, Baileys Freedom could have most to fear from Sheikh Hamdan’s Alminour, a £135,000 representative for Johnston and the distinguished Kodiac.
Mystic Knight, a brother to the very sharp Copper Knight, is another of interest in the field of seven.
