Pictures released of the first frolicking foal by tragic stallion The Lieutenant

Pictures have been released of the first foal by The Lieutenant, who was one of four stallions killed at Haras Barlovento in Cañete, Peru after intruders broke into the stud on December 21.

A talented, graded stakes-winning miler, The Lieutenant, by Street Sense, was a half-brother to Triple Crown winner Justify.

The other stallions involved in the shocking attack were Cyrus Alexander, a Grade 3-winning half-brother to Super Saver; Timely Advice, a son of A.P. Indy who had sired South American Classic winners; and Kung Fu Mambo, an Argentinian-bred son of Giant's Causeway who was an impressive winner of the Peruvian Derby.

According to a statement from the farm posted on social media, the criminals were suspected of having killed the stallions for their meat, having shot and wounded the night watchman before tying him up. The farm additionally reported the intruders stole medications and a generator.

In a message posted on Instagram on Christmas Eve, farm owner Boris Schwartzman, after outlining the achievements of the stallions who were slaughtered, wrote: “These fabulous and helpless animals were killed by ignorant, evil and unscrupulous people.

“Not only did the criminals kill them, they killed our illusions, motivation and passion; they took our dreams. At a single stroke they destroyed the hobby we have pursued for seven decades.”

The post went on to say the stud would sell its three remaining generations of horses and that it would close its doors.

The Lieutenant's filly foal was born on Saturday, February 1 at , for breeder Meadow Hill Lane Farm.

She is out of Keysong, a Kentucky-bred winner by Songandaprayer who has already produced a winner. Keysong’s second foal, Kentucky-bred Song Of The Nile by Pioneerof The Nile, realised $575,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Keysong is a half-sister to Pebble Stakes winner Miss Catalyst and from the family of 1978 Eclipse champion three-year-old filly Tempest Queen.

“We will cherish every foal we get by The Lieutenant and are very happy that the first one came to one of our favourite New York breeders, Meadow Hill Lane Farm,” said Becky Thomas, owner of Sequel New York, where The Lieutenant stood during his debut season at stud.
