Newspaperofrecord half-sister aims to make the headlines at Newmarket
Two-year-old represents breeder Allan Belshaw and trainer John Gosden
Newspaperofrecord’s bubble has burst somewhat over the last few weeks but a glimmer of her precocity will make her half-sister Daily Times a fascinating proposition at Newmarket on Saturday.
The jet-propelled Newspaperofrecord took last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf by almost seven lengths and had been considered a candidate for Royal Ascot this year, only to suffer defeats on her reappearance at Churchill Downs and again in the Wonder Again Stakes at Belmont on Thursday when beaten by Chad Brown stablemate Cambier Again.
She represents the fourth generation of the Dodge mare Simply Times, bought by Wigan-based businessman Allan Belshaw back in the 1990s. The mating of his mare Sunday Times with Lope De Vega resulted in Newspaperofrecord, who was bought for 200,000gns at Tattersalls in 2017.
Belshaw opted for freshman Coolmore stallion Gleneagles for this two-year-old, who he has kept and sent to John Gosden. Her half-sister Classical Times was also Listed class and Daily Times appears to be making an early enough debut over six furlongs in the Margaret Giffen Memorial British EBF Novice Stakes.
The mount of Nicky Mackay faces no other eyebrow-raising newcomers but two who have already set a fair standard on the track. Ottoman Court, a Shamardal half-brother to useful Dubai performer Swift Rose, should be better than when eclipsed at odds-on at Nottingham, while Richard Hannon’s Dorset Blue shaped well on debut at Nottingham.
