Just like Olden Times as promising Eydon lands the Feilden

Olden Times has become appropriately named as he is now something of a throwback, with the now 24-year-old claiming what can very much be assumed to be a rare winner through his promising son Eydon in the bet365 Feilden Stakes at Newmarket.

The stallion is of scarce bloodlines, being among the last direct successors of the Darshaan line as a son of the European champion sire.

He has effectively become a private stallion for his owner Prince Faisal and his Nawara Stud operation and stands at Throckmorton Stud in Worcestershire.

Olden Times had produced only three other stakes horses through what have been a series of small crops, headed by the fine Cups horse Times Up. Eydon is one of only two foals reported to have been born in 2019, while he covered four, two and one mares in the following three years.

Ironically, it was 21 years ago that the Prince Faisal owned and bred Olden Times claimed his first victory for John Dunlop in this very same race. He went on to land the Prix Jean Prat and the Earl of Sefton Stakes and placed in a number of other Group 1s.

Although a 22-1 chance after showing eyecatching ability in two maiden defeats, Eydon had been given a host of Classic entries by trainer Roger Varian, who had been impressed with his recent work, and came well clear of his rivals on Thursday.

"He was always going to take a bit of time given his size," Varian told Racing TV. "Prince Faisal owned Olden Times and was very keen that I would not be shy and go down the maiden route, if we were happy to his work to take him to something like the Feilden, so well done the Prince.

"I thought the manner of his performance today shows we should at least have an ambitious plan."

Eydon is the first foal of maiden Frankel mare Moon Mountain, a sibling of four stakes horses including the same owner's Sandringham Stakes scorer Festivale.
