Ten years on from what remains a career-defining victory by Bluesea Cracker in the Irish Grand National, James Motherway will saddle her first foal to grace the racecourse in Tuesday's Back On The BoyleSports App Maiden Hurdle

The County Cork trainer received the daughter of little-known stallion Buster King from a near neighbour and brought her through the point-to-pointing ranks right the way through to her 25-1 surprise at Fairyhouse.

The following season, she was bought by JP McManus and was a rare mare to run in the National itself, finishing 14th on what was to be her final start.

McManus' wife, Noreen, has bred from her, and Milan five-year-old Justfortherecord is the first to have a registered name and is one of only two unraced starters in the field of 16.

"There’s a lot of water gone under the bridge since, a lot of horses passed through, but it’s the start of a new chapter and hopefully he’ll be lucky for them," said Motherway.

"It was nice to get him from JP McManus, he’s a youngster having his first run and this is his first day at school - we have to start somewhere.

"Bluesea Cracker was a fine big mare, we got her in as a very early three-year-old, she didn’t come from the sales or anything. She was a forward type of horse, and some are more forward than others. But hopefully Justfortherecord will be a nice horse down the line."

Motherway is attempting to temper expectations, although he admitted: "When you trained the mare and you train the offspring, you’re inclined to try to look for similarities.

"He’s a nice honest horse, she was a good, honest mare. Whether he’ll reach the heights she did, we’ll have to wait and see. It’s early days.

"She could be a bit of a madam in the box if she wanted to be, but to ride her she was fine. She had her own ways in the stable, she’d let you know she was there, but he’s been a nice placid horse who has been straightforward to do."

Bluesea Cracker has produced a few subsequent foals, including a full-sister to Justfortherecord and colts by Walk In The Park and Soldier Of Fortune.

As she raced until she was nine, Motherway had been happy to draw stumps.

"She was coming back the following season but unfortunately she did a little injury, it was one of those ones where she might have come back or she mightn't have, and the decision was made that we’d retire her and she’d go to stud," he explained. "We didn’t feel the need to push her any further.

"She's my biggest winner to date, she won a Grade 2 chase as well, and I suppose she put us on the map. Nobody knew much about me before that, but they kind of did after. She was a fantastic mare and hopefully she’ll be a good broodmare for the next part of it."

Motherway has only ever had a few horses in his yard but in prize-money terms this has been his most lucrative campaign since the days of Bluesea Cracker, led by Na Trachtalai Ab landing the Midlands National at Kilbeggan last summer.

"JP has been very supportive of us all these years, he’s got this horse as well as Goodnightngodbless, who has won two races and been a nice mare.

"It’s been brilliant to have him in the yard and if we could have a bit more success, it would be great."
