Irish Derby winner's Galileo brother Dawn Rising lands Grade 3 hurdle
Sovereign's sibling switched to jumping this year after Flat campaign
A distinguished thoroughbred family's record was embellished in unlikely circumstances in Sunday's John Lynch Carpets & Flooring Monksfield Novice Hurdle at Navan.
Dawn Rising, who took advantage of drama at the final flight, is not only a son of Galileo but a full-brother of Sovereign, the winner of the 2019 Irish Derby who finished second to Enable in the following year's King George. He is now a stallion in Argentina.
Unsurprisingly, the Barronstown Stud-bred Dawn Rising had begin life with Aidan O'Brien and made quiet progress at three, winning a Limerick maiden and finishing second to Al Aasy in the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy.
Possibly, connections had taken a view when looking at another of Dawn Rising's full-brothers, Triplicate, who was inferior on the Flat but had been a good second in the Grade 1 Royal Bond at Leopardstown.
Dawn Rising had been a fair way adrift of Affordale Fury and the hot favourite American Mike with two hurdles to jump but was making progress under Mark Walsh when the former came down at the last, skirting past the faller and coming eight lengths clear.
He is from a beautiful family tracing back to the female Irish Derby winner Balanchine, out of the Nagle family's Debutante Stakes runner-up Devoted To You.
His full-sister, Forever You, moved to Australia and made A$1,350,000 when bought by the Written Tycoon Syndicate at the Inglis Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale in May.
A two-year-old half-brother by No Nay Never, Loyal Touch, is already a winner on the Flat for Mark and Charlie Johnston and runs again at Kempton on Monday.
