Teppal toughs it out in French 1,000 Guineas to give Camacho a first Group 1

The three-year-old filly was bought for €105,000 at the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale

For the second week in succession a Classic went the way of a filly bred from a modest covering fee, as the David Simcock-trained Teppal, a daughter of Yeomanstown Stud's Camacho, ran out a game winner of the Group 1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp on Sunday.

The three-year-old filly is from the ninth crop of Camacho, who stood the 2014 season - the year Teppal was conceived - at a fee of just €7,500. Her success follows on from that of 1,000 Guineas heroine Billesdon Brook, who was bred when her sire, Champs Elysees, stood for a mere €5,000.

Teppal is the first Group 1 winner and 12th stakes scorer sired by Camacho, whose other headline horses include the likes of Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes winner Green Door, and the Group 3 winners My Catch and Puff.

She was bred in France by the Swiss stud Gestut Zur Kuste, which was narrowly denied a monumental Classic double when Dice Roll, who is by Camacho's half-brother Showcasing, was beaten just a neck by Olmedo in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains a little over an hour earlier.

The Classic-winning filly is the tenth foal out of the Cadeaux Genereux mare Jummana, who made a winning debut over 7f at Lingfield, just as Teppal did.

However, their career paths have taken markedly different trajectories ever since, as Teppal remains unbeaten in three starts while her dam never won another race, with her best performance on Racing Post Ratings coming when fourth behind Crystal Star - the dam of Crystal Ocean - in the 2002 Listed Radley Stakes, for which she achieved a mark of 91.

Jummana, a sister to the Listed-winning Party, has produced four other winners, most notably Another Party, who finished runner-up in three French Group 3s. She also has a yearling colt by Showcasing.

Further back this is the family of Prix de l'Opera winner We Are, Hong Kong Vase hero Dominant and the Group 3-winning and Group 1-placed Lily's Angel, who is by Camacho's illustrious studmate Dark Angel.

Teppal joins The Grey Gatsby, Speciosa and Harbour Law in becoming a Classic winner sourced from the breeze-up sales, having graduated from Con Marnane's Bansha House Stables academy.

She was pinhooked by Marnane for €60,000 at the 2016 Arqana August V2 Yearling Sale, the same auction at which Olmedo would come under the hammer some 55 lots later.

She was then reoffered at last year's Arqana Breeze-Up Sale, where she was signed for by Blandford Bloodstock at €105,000.

"They know where to get them in future - at the breeze-up sales!" said an elated Marnane in the aftermath of the race.

"She's just pure class, even as a two-year-old she was pure class. The trainer has done an incredible job with her, he left her alone as a two-year-old and waited and waited. The dream is alive, she's so special."

Marnane enjoyed a slice of Royal Ascot glory last year when Different League - a filly owned by his wife, Theresa - landed the Albany Stakes.

When asked if he would be donning a top hat and returning to Ascot to cheer on Teppal later this year he replied: "I'm brushing it off already!"
