Solid Man to give six-time Group 1 winner Kanaloa first runner
Newmarket-bound two-year-old was sourced from the JRHA Select Sale
History will be made at Newmarket on Sunday, and not just in the first fillies’ Classic of the season, the 1,000 Guineas.
The Havana Gold Maiden Stakes over 5f at 4.10pm sees the first racecourse representative of Japan-based sire Lord Kanaloa, with Ralph Beckett set to unleash Solid Man.
Lord Kanaloa won 13 of his 19 starts, including six Group 1 events from 6f to a mile, and signed off his racing career with a five-length drubbing of the high-class sprinter Sole Power in the Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin.
The two-year-old colt Solid Man was picked up for ¥46 million (£314,300/€371,045) by Hung Kwok Hing Little, whose horses run under the name of Acing Lead Ltd, from the JRHA Select Sale in 2016.
Bred in Japan by Shadai Farm, Solid Man is out of the Listed-placed Sunday Silence mare Maruka, a sister to Grade 1 Championship Mile winner Durandal from the further family of 1976 Coronation Stakes winner Kesar Queen and the 1965 Irish Derby and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes scorer Meadow Court.
The nine-year-old Lord Kanaloa stands at the Shadai Stallion Station, alongside the likes of Deep Impact, Maurice and his own sire King Kamehameha. His first crop was bred from a fee of ¥5,000,000 (£34,160/€40,330), but he has stood at a private fee in the three subsequent breeding seasons.
In opposition to Solid Man is the Godolphin newcomer Way Of Wisdom, a son of Darley’s Lonhro. The colt was bred by Godolphin out of the placed Redoute’s Choice mare La Pelegrina, a sister to Australian champion two- and three-year-old filly Miss Finland who won a trio of top-flight events, including the Golden Slipper and Australian Guineas.
Way Of Wisdom is his dam's third foal, and is a half-brother to the useful Albernathy, a son of Dubawi.
