Shades of Almanzor as Wootton maintains unbeaten record
The son of Wootton Bassett landed the Listed Prix Isonomy at Deauville
The light may have gone out on the racing career of Wootton Bassetts's leading performer Almanzor, but the fuse was ignited in another of his sons on Thursday as the two-year-old colt Wootton recorded an explosive five-length success in the Listed Prix Isonomy at Deauville.
The colt was settled in midfield by Mickael Barzalona, and there were distinct shades of his paternal brother Almanzor as Wootton's huge stride readily drew him alongside the leaders as the field entered the straight.
As soon as his jockey asked for an effort the response was both immediate and electrifying, as Wootton put clear daylight between himself and his six rivals - headed by the Ed Dunlop-trained Alternative Fact.
"Wootton won very nicely," commented Godolphin's Lisa-Jane Graffard. "He stepped up on his debut and it was a very professional performance. He showed his class and is an exciting horse to head into the winter with."
Trained by Henri-Alex Pantall and bred by Ecurie Haras de Quetieville, Wootton was bought privately by Godolphin shortly after he produced one of the most impressive debuts of the season back in August.
Wootton hails from the third crop of Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Wootton Bassett, who shot to prominence as the sire of last year's European champion Almanzor - who will take up stud duty at Haras d'Etreham in 2018. Wootton is out of the Group 3-placed American Post mare American Nizzy.
