Next turn of the wheel for Frankel
Champion could launch his second crop on Friday
With his first foals having made such a big impression since appearing on the racetrack last year, Frankel fever is now set to enter the next stage.
The dual world champion could have his first starter from his second crop at Newbury on Friday, with Juddmonte homebred Westerland featuring among the entries for the 6f maiden that opens the two-day Al Shaqab Lockinge meeting.
It was in this very race 12 months ago that John Gosden saddled Frankel's debut runner Cunco to provide his sire with a first success. Cunco has trained on well enough to win the Group 3 bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown in April.
Westerland is trained by Gosden, like Cunco, and will carry the colours of his owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah. He is out of the Listed-winning Zafonic mare Arabesque - making him a half-brother to sires Showcasing and Camacho.
While it remains to be seen whether Westerland will be declared to make his debut on Friday, there could be a little bit of history repeating itself if he does.
