National Colour the dam of two Group 1 winners on same card

For a broodmare to produce a top-level winner is an admirable feat; to deliver more than one top-level winner over the course of their paddocks career makes them an exceptional producer.

But for a broodmare to be represented by two Group 1 winners on the same card, only hours apart, is a truly astonishing achievement. That is exactly what former champion South African sprinter National Colour did at Turffontein on Saturday.

Brothers Mustaaqeem and Rafeef – both Australian-bred sons of Redoute's Choice out of National Colour trained by Mike De Kock for Hamdan Al Maktoum – won the SA Nursery over 6f and Computaform Sprint over 5f respectively.

Both colts put clear water between themselves and their rivals, too. Mustaaqeem won the two-year-old contest by four lengths from compatriot and stablemate Naafer, a son of Lonhro, while Rafeef won the prestigious sprint by one and a quarter lengths from the Overlord gelding Talktothestars.

Mustaaqeem topped the final session of last year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale when bought by Angus Gold on behalf of Shadwell for A$1.75 million (around £950,000/€1.15m). Rafeef was an A$800,000 (around £450,000/€540,000) purchase by the operation from the same sale in 2013.

National Colour, a daughter of the Danzig stallion National Assembly, was trained by Sean Tarry to win the Computaform Sprint, South African Fillies Sprint and Mercury Sprint at three.

She went on to win at Nad Al Sheba and ran with credit in Europe in 2008, finishing sixth to Equiano in the King's Stand Stakes and a close second to Borderlescott in the Nunthorpe.

National Colour has clearly clicked brilliantly with influential Australian sire Redoute's Choice, who is owned by Mustaaqeem and Rafeef's breeder Arrowfield Stud.

Mustaaqeem and Rafeef become the 31st and 32nd Group/Grade 1 winners for Redoute's Choice, who is standing the coming southern hemisphere season at a fee of A$137,500 (around £78,000/€93,000).
