Mukhadram off the mark as Dame Gladys scores at Nottingham

Coral-Eclipse hero Mukhadram became the latest first-season sire to get off the mark in 2018 when his daughter Dame Gladys landed the Poppy & Pint Lady Bay Fillies' Novice Median Auction Stakes over 5f at Nottingham on Friday.

Bred by, and sporting the colours of, the late Guy Reed, Dame Gladys - who was making it second time lucky after finishing second on debut - is the third foal out of the unraced Dr Fong mare Nurse Gladys, whose other two runners, the Rail Link gelding Cyril and the Bahamian Bounty gelding Thorndyke, are both winners.

In turn, Nurse Gladys is out of the stakes-winning Flossy, who landed a Listed race at Chester over 1m5½f.

Mukhadram has clearly imparted more precocity than he had chance to show himself, having made his debut in the 2012 Wood Ditton Stakes. The son of Shamardal finished second to Mariner's Cross, but was promoted to top spot after the first passed the post was disqualified having tested positive for a prohibited substance.

Mukhadram went on to win four more races during his 16-race career, including the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes and the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes, both aged four.

A remarkably tough and consistent performer, Mukhadram reached the podium in four Group 1s, and finally had his day in the sun when running out an impressive two-length winner of the 2014 Coral-Eclipse.

The nine-year-old was bred by Wardall Bloodstock out of Magic Tree, a Timber County half-sister to Group 1-winning siblings Mastery and Kirklees. Further back this is the family of dual Group 1 winner Cherokee Rose and Cable Bay. He was bought by Shadwell for 190,000gns at the 2009 Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

Mukhadram stands at Shadwell's Nunnery Stud, where his fee of £7,000 has remained unchanged since his debut season, and has 87 two-year-olds to run for him this year.

His progeny have proved popular in the sales ring, with a half-sister to crack juvenile Beckford fetching £200,000 from BBA Ireland at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale.
