Homebreds show plenty of promise at Newbury and York

Hot on the heels of a one-three for his progeny in the Prix Saint-Alary at Deauville last weekend and Dartmouth's Yorkshire Cup success earlier in the day, Dubawi's son Dubai Thunder stormed to an emphatic success in a 1m2f maiden at Newbury on Friday to establish his Classic claims.

The colt was having his first start for trainer Saeed bin Suroor, and holds an entry for the Investec Derby in two weeks' time, for which he is now as short as 14/1.

When given the hurry up by jockey Adam Kirby, Dubai Thunder readily put ten lengths between himself and Sir Percy's Hawridge Pearl, with Born To Sea's Dark Pearl a neck back in third.

A Darley homebred, Dubai Thunder looks set to become the fourth runner out of the dual Group 1 winner Gonbarda to achieve a Racing Post Rating of 100 or more.

Gonbarda, a 15-year-old daughter of Lando, has also produced Lockinge and Champions Stakes hero Farhh - whose top-flight wins both came at five; Racing History, winner of the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor and second in the Grosser Preis von Bayern, and Basem, third in a Group 3 at York. Gonbarda also has a yearling Pivotal filly in the US.

Farhh entered stud at Dalham Hall in 2014, with his first crop now juveniles.

Gonbarda herself was a top-class racemare, landing two Group 1s in Germany including the Preis von Europa, and is one of nine winners from as many runners out of Gonfalon.

Gonfalon is also the dam of Gonfilia, who won the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom, and stakes scorers Gonlargo and Gorlor, out of German 1000 Guineas winner Grimpola - who features on the page of fellow Classic winners Fame And Glory and Legatissimo.

Prophecy family shows plenty of promise

Earlier on the Newbury card Frankel's first two-year-old runner from his second crop, Westerland, ran with plenty of promise to finish second to the Kodiac colt Nebo in a 6f maiden.

Trained by John Gosden, the Juddmonte homebred is a half-brother to sires Camacho and Showcasing, the latter of whom sired Tasleet to win the Group 2 Duke of York Clipper Logistics Stakes on Wednesday. The trio are out of a daughter of Prophecy, winner of the 1993 Cheveley Park Stakes.

Prophecy is also the granddam of Wednesday's Musidora Stakes winner Shutter Speed, who, like Westerland, is a Juddmonte homebred.

Listed success for Hesmonds homebred

The success of homebreds was not confined to Newbury, with Nurlan Bizakov's Invincible Spirit filly Tomyris landing the Listed Michael Seely Memorial Stakes at York.

Bred by Bizakov's Hesmonds Stud, Tomyris is out of Matron Stakes fourth Totally Devoted, a half-sister to Derby second and St Leger winner Rule Of Law.

The filly could now be set to take up her entry for the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.
