Glenview Stud mourns loss of new jumps recruit Karpino
German 2,000 Guineas winner was out of a Listed-placed sister to Milan
Glenview Stud in Fermoy, County Cork is mourning the loss of new recruit Karpino after the Classic-winning miler succumbed to an aggressive malignant tumour at the end of March, having successfully covered a number of mares in his first few months at the stud.
"It's very disappointing as he was being very well accepted by breeders," said Catherine Cashman of Rathbarry and Glenview Studs.
"They liked what they saw when they came to see him. He was a very good-looking horse with plenty of size and scope and a great walk."
The five-year-old son of Cape Cross was bred by Gestut Fahrhof out of the Listed-placed Sadler's Wells mare Kahara, a sister to St Leger winner and One For Arthur's sire Milan, from the family of dual Derby winner and Group 1 sire Kahyasi.
Trained by Andreas Wohler for Qatar Racing, Karpino won on his sole start at two at Hoppegarten and followed up with two Pattern wins at three, most notably the Group 2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen at Cologne – the German equivalent of the 2,000 Guineas - when he strolled to a four-and-a-half success.
As a Classic-winning miler bred on the Cape Cross-Sadler's Wells cross, and from a strong staying family of the Aga Khan, Karpino had been well received by jumps breeders and was expected to cover a substantial number of mares in his first season.
The remaining stallions at Glenview are Malinas, Robin Des Champs, Shirocco, Sholokhov and new recruit Youmzain.
Of those, Robin Des Champs looks to have produced another top-notcher with Blow By Blow winning the Martin Pipe at last month's Cheltenham Festival, joining the sire's other festival winners Quevega, Sir Des Champs, Un Temps Pour Tout and Vautour.
