Garswood the latest first-season sire to field a runner
Garswood becomes the latest first-season sire to be represented when his son Bengali Spirit lines up in the four-runner novice stakes over the minimum trip at Musselburgh (4.10) on Saturday.
Trained by Richard Fahey and to be ridden by Paul Hanagan, Bengali Spirit was purchased for €24,000 by his trainer at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, and has an attractive pedigree being a sibling to two winners, out of a five-time winning daughter of Italian 1,000 Guineas scorer Sadowa.
Garswood, an eight-year-old son of Dutch Art, won in stakes company at two, three and four and his most notable victories came in the Lennox Stakes at three and the Prix Maurice de Gheest at four.
The high-class sprinter-miler was retired to Cheveley Park Stud at a fee of €7,000, which was clipped to €5,000 in his second year, and €4,000 for the past two breeding seasons.
His most expensive offspring sold at public auction to date was a 140,000gns Book 2 yearling, a half-brother to Son Of Rest, who was third to Caravaggio in last year's Flying Five Stakes, out of the winning Danetime mare Hightime Heroine.

Final thought
Kodiac smashed the previous worldwide record when siring 61 individual juvenile winners last year.
The half-brother to Invincible Spirit looks to have continued where he left off, with the Charlie Fellowes-trained Snazzy fending off Burwaaz filly Harparelle to land the valuable two-year-old conditions stakes at Newcastle on Friday.
Snazzy completed a double on the card for her sire, with Cowboy Soldier landing the novice stakes earlier in the day, which also happened to be run over the minimum trip.
Kodiac also had a good innings at the All-Weather Championships at Lingfield, with Reckless Endeavour second in the Apprentice Handicap and Second Thought runner-up in the Mile.
