Frankel can hit the right note with first jumps runner at Catterick

Solo Saxophone will become Frankel's first runner over jumps when he lines up in the ten-runner juvenile hurdle at Catterick on Tuesday (12.50).

Trained by Dan Skelton and ridden by brother Harry, Solo Saxophone will race in a first-time tongue-tie.

Brendan Bashford and Ryan Mahon signed at €62,000 for Solo Saxophone at the Goffs Horses In Training Sale in October, and he will race in the colours of BGC Racing.

The three-year-old colt was placed in three of his five starts on the Flat for trainer Dermot Weld – including when second to dual Grade 1 novice hurdle winner Jer's Girl in a 1m4f Roscommon maiden in September.

Frankel would not be the first in his paternal sire-line to make his mark on the jumps, with grandsire Sadler's Wells responsible for legendary hurdler Istabraq and sire Galileo having supplied Supasundae, winner of this year's Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival – both of whom, like Solo Saxophone, were bred for the Flat.

Solo Saxophone is a half-brother to the Listed-placed sprinter Sailors Swan and was bred by Moyglare Stud Farm out of their homebred Grade 3 winner Society Hostess.

Moyglare's involvement in the family stretches back to Solo Saxophone's third dam Grenzen, a multiple Grade 2 winner and runner-up in the 1978 Kentucky Oaks.

Grenzen produced nine winners from ten runners including Grade 1 handicap winner Twilight Agenda, while her daughters have produced exceptional performers over a variety of distances including Go And Go (1990 Belmont Stakes), Media Puzzle (2002 Melbourne Cup) and Refuse To Bend (2002 National Stakes, 2003 2,000 Guineas, 2004 Queen Anne Stakes and 2004 Coral-Eclipse).

Family affair

Grenzen also features in the same contest as the granddam of Wind Turbine, who has failed to fire in four starts on the Flat, including when last of 12 in a Newcastle handicap on Saturday.

The Power gelding is a half-brother to the Grade 3 novice hurdle winner Vital Plot and to the Flat Listed-placed Master Speaker.

Of those with hurdling experience, perhaps Beach Break will give Solo Saxophone most to do on his hurdling bow. The Cacique gelding was second in a Bangor juvenile hurdle in mid-November and is out of an unraced sister to Beat Hollow.
