First South African winner for high-flying sophomore Frankel

Just over a week after Merovee became Frankel's first winner in Australia, a daughter of the dual world champion broke her duck in a fillies' maiden at Scottsville to become the first of her sire's progeny to enter the winners' enclosure in South Africa.

Trained by Dennis Drier and ridden by Anton Marcus, the three-year-old Miss Frankel was sent off the 4-5 favourite and saw off 13 opponents in the 5f contest, showing the benefit of a debut seventh-placed finish at Kenilworth.

"She has shown us plenty at home and we have given her
plenty of time," Drier told the Sporting Post. "Her first run was all wrong – she was simply starstruck. She will join my Cape Summer Season team of 26 and her next run will be down there."

An Avontuur Thoroughbreds homebred, Miss Frankel is out of the South African champion sprinter Val De Ra, who won three Group 1s: the Computaform Sprint, the Cape Flying Championships and the South African Fillies Sprint.

The daughter of Var was covered by Frankel to southern hemisphere time at a fee of £125,000 in 2013 - a fee at which the son of Galileo remains. She had previously visited Oasis Dream at Banstead Manor, and is due to be covered by South African champion sire Trippi during the upcoming southern hemisphere breeding season.
