Elite sires chosen for Newsells Park Stud's blueblood broodmares

Yummy Mummy, the dam of Classic heroine Legatissimo and one of the jewels in the Newsells Park Stud broodmare band, is set for a date with Darley’s flagship sire Dubawi after she delivers a foal by the Dalham Hall Stud resident.

The 12-year-old daughter of Montjeu, who was bought by the Hertfordshire operation for 460,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2009, has rewarded the faith with her progeny enjoying success both on the track and in the ring.

Yummy Mummy leading performer Legatissimo won the 1,000 Guineas, Nassau Stakes and Pretty Polly Stakes for the Coolmore partners, who bought her for 350,000gns, while her Shamardal yearling filly was snapped up by Blandford Bloodstock for 870,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last year.

Explaining the decision to send Yummy Mummy back to Dubawi, Newsells Park Stud general manager Julian Dollar said: “Dubawi has had some success with Montjeu and the mating works on paper.

"It should work well physically but I’ll know more in a few weeks' time [when she delivers her foal]. What we’re trying to achieve is to produce racehorses - that, at the end of the day, is the most important thing to us.

“But, from a practical and financial point of view, we need to produce yearlings that are then going to sell well. It’s a potentially exciting mating if it’s a colt for the sales later on. Dubawi is an unbelievable sire.”

Giants Play, a ten-year-old daughter of Giant’s Causeway and Playful Act and the dam of the winners Playful Sound and Azam, recently delivered a filly foal by Dubawi and will head to Banstead Manor Stud for a date with dual world champion Frankel.

"It’s going to be very interesting how Frankel's three-year-olds go on as his two-year-olds were so exciting and impressive," Dollar said. "He was an incredible racehorse who developed from two to three and one can only be excited about what he can do.

“It’s a great story for the industry and let’s hope he really goes on. It’d be disappointing if he doesn't but I don’t see any reason that would happen. Playful Sound stays in training this year and hopefully she can get some black type. This is a family that develops late and improves from two to three.”

Loveisallyouneed, a ten-year-old daughter of Sadler’s Wells who is the dam of the top-priced Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling of 2015, the Dubawi filly bought by MV Magnier for 2,100,000gns, is pregnant to Sea The Stars.

Once she delivers her foal by the Gilltown Stud resident, she will be covered by Golden Horn, in whom Newsells Park own a breeding right.

Shastye, one of two mares the nursery sent to Galileo last year, is set for a return date with the Coolmore linchpin and Dollar said: “Similar to what a lot of people have already said, Galileo is not getting any younger. It’s a marriage that seems to work every time and I don’t see any point in changing things. While the horse is around we have to use him."

Matings between the mare and stallion has proved fruitful in recent years with the cross being responsible for Group 2 scorer Secret Gesture and Group 3 winner Sir Issac Newton, at 3,600,000gns the most expensive yearling colt sold in Europe.

Maureen, a Group 3-winning daughter of Holy Roman Emperor, was the second Newsells Park mare covered by Galileo last year and she will return to Ireland but this time for a date with Yeomanstown Stud hotshot Dark Angel.

Dollar said: “We’re just switching a little bit this time and going to an out-and-out precocious type of stallion in Dark Angel. Hopefully that’ll be a nice mix for her. He’s commercially popular and the mating should throw up a really precocious type.”

Date With Destiny - a nine-year-old who carries the distinction of being the only progeny of George Washington, and the dam of Listed-placed Beautiful Morning - is in foal to Ballylinch Stud resident Lope De Vega. Once she delivers her foal by the son of Shamardal she will head to Dalham Hall Stud to be covered by Iffraaj.

“He’s a competitively priced stallion and he should have better crops in the pipeline so his profile could continue to rise,” said Dollar of Iffraaj, whose son Wootton Bassett supplied last year's European champion Almanzor.

Prix de l'Opera winner Kinnaird, a daughter of Dr Devious who is the dam of Group winner Berkshire, has a “cracking” Oasis Dream colt foal at foot according to Dollar and was covered by Invincible Spirit last week.

Dollar said: “Kinnaird's not getting any younger now, she’s 16, but the family has developed since we were lucky enough to purchase her. Her first foal turned out to be the dam of Ivawood and she’s gone on to produce Berkshire.

“She’s got a few offspring in the pipeline who could be interesting. We want to keep supporting her strongly and after Oasis Dream it’s not so different going to another son of Green Desert in Invincible Spirit, who we also have a share in.”

Grade 3 winner Ceisteach, a six-year-old daughter of New Approach bought for $700,000 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale in 2015, is in foal to Oasis Dream and will also be covered by Invincible Spirit.

Dynaforce, a 14-year-old daughter of Dynaformer who was barren to Gleneagles last year, was recently covered by Invincible Spirit’s top miling son Kingman, while Green Swallow, a 16-year-old daughter of Green Tune, has been covered by another son of Invincible Spirit in the shape of dual Group 1 hero Shalaa.

“Green Swallow went to Golden Horn last year but she sadly lost the pregnancy," Dollar said. "We like the Green Desert/Invincible Spirit line and again it’s a slight variation on a theme. Sending an older proven mare to a young exciting stallion seems good on paper and is potentially commercial too.”

Entente Cordiale, the dam of Group 1 hero and Newsells Park sire Equiano and dual Listed winner Evita Peron, was barren to Pivotal last year but will head to Cheveley Park Stud to be covered by the stalwart stallion again.

Evita Peron, a six-year-old daughter of Pivotal, has recently delivered her first foal in the shape of an Invincible Spirit filly and will join Giants Play in being covered by Frankel.

Funsie, an 18-year-old daughter of Saumarez who is the dam of Derby hero Authorized, was rested last season and will head to Banstead Manor Stud for a date with Dansili.

Dollar said: “We’re probably going to have one or maybe two more years out of Funsie. She has a very nice Dansili yearling colt and we’re going to go back to Dansili and pray that she gets a filly.”

Langs Lash, an 11-year-old daughter of Noverre who won the Queen Mary Stakes, is in foal to Nathaniel and will be covered by Zoffany this year, while My Special J’s, a Group 2-winning daughter of Harlan’s Holiday who is currently in foal to Frankel, will head to France for a date with Siyouni.
