Dundalk one-two for final crop two-year-olds by Scat Daddy

Experience counted in the five-furlong maiden for two-year-olds at Dundalk on Wednesday as Skitter Scatter, the only runner with racecourse experience, beat hot favourite Sergei Prokofiev by a short head.

The first two home both hail from the final crop of the late, lamented Ashford Stud resident Scat Daddy, famed for his prowess at producing Royal Ascot winners such as Caravaggio, Lady Aurelia and No Nay Never.

Speaking of No Nay Never, he is a freshman sire himself now and his first European runner The Irish Rover was just over a length behind the Scat Daddy pair in third.

The Patrick Prendergast-trained Skitter Scatter was third on debut over the same course and distance a fortnight ago.

She is owned by Anthony Rogers and was bred by his Airlie Stud in partnership with Three Chimneys Farm. She is a half-sister to Data Dependent, a winning daughter of More Than Ready who was a length second to the Scat Daddy filly Daddy Is A Legend in the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes at Del Mar at two last year.

Her dam Dane Street, by Street Cry, was a dual 1m2f winner at Leopardstown and Fairyhouse and is a half-sister to Dewhurst Stakes winner Intense Focus. Further back it is the family of Group 1 heroes Sholokhov and Soldier Of Fortune.

Sergei Prokofiev, surely a winner in waiting now, was a $1.1 million Keeneland September yearling purchase by Coolmore and is in the care of Aidan O'Brien.

We could get a glimpse of more of Scat Daddy's last two-year-olds in Ireland this week, with four – including Sergei Prokofiev, who must be a doubtful runner now – entered in a Naas maiden on Friday.

All the other three are also trained by O'Brien – Empire State, a $275,000 Keeneland September yearling out of the winning Not For Love mare Love's Blush; Mount Tabora, a half-brother to high-class fillies Chachamaidee and J Wonder; and Van Beethoven, a colt out of the winning Montbrook mare My Sister Sandy.

It promises to be a big year for Scat Daddy, who has the four-year-old Lady Aurelia into bat for him again, and with a strong hand in the Kentucky Derby from his penultimate three-year-old crop, including Mendelssohn, Justify, Flameaway and Combatant.
