Dream start for Chiara Luna and her dam Princess Highway
War Front filly is the first foal out of Moyglare's Ribblesdale winner
Despite being made to work for victory on her debut, Chiara Luna showed every ounce of resilience to claim success in the opening race on the card at Leopardstown on Thursday. In the process she helped her dam, Princess Highway, get off the mark as a broodmare with her very first runner.
There was much to like about her display for Dermot Weld and her owner-breeders, Moyglare Stud, as she hit the front a furlong from home. The Dark Angel filly Modern Love laid down a sustained challenge but it was Chiara Luna who dug deep and prevailed by three quarters of a length.
Her pedigree is resplendent with Moyglare stars as Princess Highway, a daughter of Street Cry, was campaigned by the County Kildare nursery to win three races including the Ribblesdale Stakes as well as finishing third in the Irish Oaks. Victory in the Ribblesdale saw Princess Highway emulate her dam, the Danehill mare Irresistible Jewel, who landed the 2002 edition of the race.
Princess Highway is also a half-sister to Mad About You, who carried the Moyglare silks to win the Group 3 Gladness Stakes as well as being third in two Group 1 contests, and to Irish St Leger scorer Royal Diamond.
The family has been active in recent years with Irresistible Jewel a half-sister to the dam of Moyglare's Group 3 scorer Profound Beauty. Since retiring to the paddocks, Profound Beauty has herself produced the dual Listed-winning Dubawi mare Rose De Pierre for Moyglare. Other winners nurtured by the operation that appear in Chiara Luna's pedigree are Carla Bianca and Joailliere.
Chiara Luna is by Claiborne Farm's leading sire War Front and the cross of the son of Danzig over Street Cry mares has already produced Group 2 winner War Decree. In recent weeks, War Front's flag has been flown by Falmouth Stakes and Prix Rothschild heroine Roly Poly.
