Grumpy Charley maintained a perfect run for Distillery Stud’s Whisky Rose by winning at Chepstow on Wednesday, meaning that all four of the broodmare’s progeny to date have scored under rules.

Robert Robinson’s Annan operation has already been responsible for his half-sister Misty Whisky, a Listed bumper winner who was second in the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton earlier in the month.

One For Rosie was a three-time winner who finished third in an Aintree Grade 1 as a novice for Nigel Twistor-Davies, while Whisky Rose’s first foal, Air Horse One, is a fine old stager for the Harry Fry stable.

Grumpy Charley, by Shirocco, was bought by his owner Geoff Thompson for £52,000 as a three-year-old store at Goffs UK in 2018 and was renewing an old association in the two-mile novice hurdle at Chepstow as he drew just under four lengths clear as 4-7 favourite on his third start over timber.

Jockey Bryan Carver had won on him back in his point-to-point days, landing a bumper race at Milbourne St Andrew in 2019 on his debut for Chris Honour’s stable. Another half-sister by Ocovango sold to Donald McCain for £26,000 at last year's Goffs UK Summer Sale.

Although Distillery Stud missed out on a Great British Bonus by virtue of Grumpy Charley being a gelding, they scooped one worth £10,000 when Misty Whisky won at Ludlow in December, as well as two more through Ishkhara Lady, another mare to be going through the gears for the Fry stable.
