Good Magic retired to stand at Hill 'n' Dale Farms

Multiple Grade 1-winning champion Good Magic has been retired and will stand at John Sikura's Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Kentucky.

The son of leading sire Curlin was trained throughout his career by Chad Brown for the co-ownership group of e Five Racing Thoroughbreds and Stonestreet Stables.

"Good Magic is a fantastic addition to our stallion roster. It is rare indeed for a champion two-year-old to retain his Grade 1 form at three, which was witnessed by Good Magic's narrow defeat by super horse Justify in the Kentucky Derby," said Sikura, president of Hill 'n' Dale, in a statement.

"We sold Good Magic for breeder Stonestreet for $1 million as a yearling, and he was a beautiful horse. I remember him as medium-sized, a great mover, and completely correct. Valiant, supremely talented, and by Curlin, breeders will love him."

Good Magic finished second in his debut at Saratoga, but showed he belonged among the best with a second in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park. He completed his juvenile year with a four-and-a-quarter-length romp in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar, and in doing so was named Eclipse champion two-year-old male.

A winner of three $1 million dollar races in his career, Good Magic's three-year-old campaign confirmed him as one of the leading runners of his generation.

On the road to the Kentucky Derby, Good Magic placed in the Fountain of Youth in his sophomore debut followed by a victory at Keeneland in the historic Toyota Blue Grass Stakes.

Second to undefeated Triple Crown winner Justify in the Derby, Good Magic later captured the second Grade 1 of his career with an impressive three-length win in the Haskell Invitational Stakes.

Brown said of the colt: "Good Magic showed incredible talent and durability as I put him through the most demanding campaign of any horse I've ever trained. He's an extremely rare colt and should make a top stallion."

His heart and determination were second to none. Good Magic was a consummate professional throughout his racing career. Good Magic retires with a record of three wins and four placings from nine starts and career earnings of $2,945,000.

He will stand for a fee of $30,000.
