Frankel's daughter with huge sentimental value to Car Colston Hall set for debut
Elena's Gift among several newcomers to note at Leicester and Kempton on Tuesday
She might be unlikely to start favourite in her race but Elena’s Gift is arguably the newcomer of most note on Tuesday.
The Frankel filly contests the opening mile novice stakes at Leicester (1,37) and is the final foal out of Car Colston Hall Stud’s grand servant Sant Elena, who sadly died of colic last year aged 17.
She has produced six winners so far, most notably Group 1 winner Reckless Abandon, by Exchange Rate, whose brilliant juvenile career included victories in the Norfolk Stakes, Prix Robert Papin and, at the top level, the Prix Morny and Middle Park.
The dam has also been well represented by this season’s Chantilly Group 3 winner Erasmo, while Best Approach was a Listed winner in Japan a few years ago for her.
Frankel of course needs no introduction, but the Leicester debutante’s dam would be much less familiar. She was an Efisio half-sister to top-level winners Brando and Ticker Tape, and they were all out of Car Colston Hall’s foundation mare Wiener Wald. Sant Elana was a winner at Kempton and Nottingham for Geoff Wragg in a fairly short but quite productive career.
Wiener Wald produced nine winners in all, notably Racing Post Trophy winner Crowded House.
Elena’s Gift has been retained by the stud, to race for the Eclipse Partnership, and is with Ralph Beckett.
She is set to face seven rivals on her debut, including Godolphin homebred Perseus Way, who is from the family of Master Of The Seas and a son of Sea The Stars.
Others making their first start are 130,000gns Book 2 buy Groundbreaker, a colt by Oasis Dream who carries the silks of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, and Intello’s son Valsad, who has a connection to Groundbreaker’s owner given his dam Vuela is a half-sister to El Drama, the colt who carried Sheikh Obaid’s familiar yellow and black silks to success in the Dee Stakes at the Chester May meeting this year.
Those interested in two-year-old racing and newcomers will be kept on the hook by the 7f maiden at Kempton (5,30), which features the debut of Sense Of Power, a €330,000 foal recruited by Godolphin at the 2019 Goffs November Sale.
The Invincible Spirit colt, a stablemate of Perseus Way, was bred by an Irish National Stud syndicate out of Giant’s Causeway mare Boldarra, who was unraced but a half-sister to US stakes winners Sarach and All Included.
Sense Of Power is the mount of William Buick, whose jockey title rival Oisin Murphy is aboard the only debutante filly in the contest, the Queen’s homebred Distant Light.
By Fastnet Rock, her dam Light Music carried the colours of the Racing Post’s most eminent reader to victory in the Listed Radley Stakes (a neck ahead of another in Her Majesty’s silks, Make Fast, as it happens), while she has gone one step further as a broodmare in producing this year’s Group 3 Summer Stakes scorer Light Refrain, another homebred by the Queen.
Lady Bamford’s homebred Blueberry Hill, and Godolphin homebred Night Of Luxury - both second on their debut - set a fair standard here for what should be an informative contest.
